3 Dr. Seuss Truths for Business

Only you can control your future.

~ Dr. Seuss

The phone has been ringing non-stop, you made a large accounting error, the babysitter is sick and you haven’t had a single sale all day. It may be hard to remember at this point that you’re the one controlling where your life is going. Right now, it seems you have no control. What you are forgetting is that how you react, what you do, today, is creating what is coming to you in the future.

So, when those stressful days come – and they will – step back and think about how this day will end. See yourself handling the chaos with grace and calmness. It may even be beneficial for you to step away, grab a coffee and reflect on why you are doing what you are doing. Remembering the why often realigns us to the place where our desires for the future live.

The more that you READ, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll GO!

~ Dr. Seuss

Leaders are learners. Period. I was recently having a discussion with a very bright young business person and I asked them what they were reading. They replied, “I just don’t have time to read”. I then asked them what they are watching on Netflix right now, they replied, “Oh! I’m watching all the old Frazier episodes! Those guys are such a crack up!”. No time to read – I see why.

As an avid reader and life-long learner, this is not as much of a chore for me as I know it is for others. I realize people under 50 think books are passé, but there are many ways to read both fiction, and non-fiction today using technology, if you think that is a must. Also, the internet, when used carefully, can be a wealth of knowledge.

All genres of writing have something to offer the business professional. Vocabulary, imagery, character development and storytelling in fiction help me as an entrepreneur open my creative side, as well as show me new ways to get a vision across to my audience. The right story told the right way can be so powerful.

Personal and business development books are an amazing bank of knowledge on how to do anything from archiving your family history to Zen in business. Biographies can teach you to see the world from others’ viewpoints …. I could go on, but I think my point here is made.

Leaders are Learners – and readers.

Today you are YOU! That is truer than TRUE! There is no one alive that is you-er than YOU!

~ Dr. Seuss

When you are doing what you love, it shows. When you are working with people you love and admire, it brings a certain lightness to your work. Being true to yourself, listening to your intuition when making decisions, is certainly a muscle that needs to be strengthened before you believe in it.

Once you start asking yourself the right questions when making decisions, you will get better at it. The muscle memory will form and you will start to trust YOU! One thing I do when feeling a bit overwhelmed by my to-do list, decisions on what to get done in a day, is refer to my goals. I place all the items on my list that will get me closer to my goal in my calendar. Once those are placed, I can maybe get some other items in there – but my goals - that is what is true for me – so that is where I start.

And, when all else fails, here is one last piece of advice from the political cartoonist turned children’s writer.

Don’t give up, I believe in you all!
